Mid-Week Report
Conditions were difficult so far this week so let's focus on the positives first. Here's Eric picking up his mount of last year's buck.
The weather started out really windy as a cold front moved thru. The only deer I saw in the first 3 days were 5 does on the first evening.
Eventually the front came thru and we had some wind and snow.
Finally the wind died down and it got pretty cold - about 21 degrees in the morning.
We had multiple hunters at multiple locations and nothing was moving anywhere.
It was pretty frustrating.
I did see a little sign like this fresh scrape.
Our junior hunter headed to stand (the playhouse) in the mid-days.
He did a lot of glassing.
But they never saw anything.
So we bundled up and went out to check the cameras to see if anything was really moving.
The hunters.
The photo count was low on all cameras.
Yeah, that's frustration.
Anyway, most of the photos were coyotes - they didn't mind moving in the wind and snow.
The foxes were moving too.
And there was an occasional night time buck.
No bucks moving in daylight.
It's a big difference versus last week.
Getting much warmer for the weekend - not sure if that will be better. But we ate well...

It's Showtime!
Tommy and I made it out Sunday afternoon to get ready for gun season.
We started on the camera tour before others arrived.
We eventually got around to all the cameras.
But a cold front came thru over night - the wind picked up as the temps dropped.
We got zero'd in and ready to hunt.
The good news is that the cameras showed daylight activity by shooter bucks.
The bad news is that by morning the wind was howling at 20 to 25 mph.
Nobody moving in this wind.
It's supposed to be cooler and a little calmer by tomorrow.
The hunt today isn't likely to be very productive in this wind.
We may go furniture shopping at Millers.
Not sure what got this guy moving..
But it made an interesting series...
Wonder when he stopped.
Bobcat.
Grey fox.

Gun Season Prep
I got one afternoon at the farm - first time in awhile. It was a lovely day.
Got out the 45-70. I wasn't sure what load we shot last year but I had 2 boxes of a 325 grain Hornady lever load. Original group shot low and a little right. I adjusted and aimed for the upper right bullseye. Close enough.
I also got out the muzzleloader. It gets terribly inaccurate when not cleaned. I don't think that the load seats all the way. Anyway, got it sort of ok.
I also shot a group with the 300WM. It shot a nice group 2 1/2" high like it was supposed to. There is only one explanation for the lucky miss on my elk - operator error.
The food plots still have a lot of food in them.
Some years they are grazed to nothing before gun season. We should be good this year.
Lots of good clover left.
Not sure what this means for winter?
This rub is on at least a 6" trunk.
View from the pond stand.
Beautiful evening.
Ended up seeing 9 does and two bucks. Hard to tell but a nice 10 point is out.
Thru the binos at 95 yards.
Finished up last years back straps.
I had about 3 weeks activity on the cameras.
Lots of daylight buck traffic.
This is a familiar 9.
