Georgia Quail Hunt - Rio Piedra Plantation

My elk hunting friends, Jim and Bob, had planned a hunting trip for a business outing.  They had some guests coming from out of the country but, at the last minute, the guests had to cancel.  Since the trip was booked and paid for, they were looking for "fillers" to use up the hunt spots that they had purchased.  One "filler" was Stu who joined us from Louisville and our 5th hunter was Larry who works with Jim and Bob. I got the call on Friday and we drove to Georgia on Sunday. This left Joan home alone to manage both the dogs and the trick or treaters on Monday for Halloween.

Rio Piedra has a really nice lodge and we were served great food.

We had a nice fire on this patio on Halloween night.  There were a few adult beverages consumed and one or two stories were told.

There are dog boxes on the back of the jeeps and the guns go on the front.  We hunted with Matt and Randy for guides and they were super. Each guide put two pointers out at a time along with a flusher/retreiver.
You can get an idea of the property here behind Bob.  Big tall pines and oaks with low cover below them.
The mornings were brisk but it warmed up in the afternoon.  It was sunny and nice both days. The guides kept the dogs well-watered and changed them out frequently to keep them fresh.

It was Halloween - do you recognize anyone?

How about below?

This is Randy with his flusher, General.  Larry and Stu are looking for the pointers who weren't always easy to find on point out in the heavy cover.

When Randy switched out the flushing dog, he just left General sitting in the Jeep.  We would take off with 3 other dogs, hunt and retreive birds, and when we came back to the Jeep, General would be sitting there waiting for us.
Stu and Bob look pretty happy.  It might have something to do with the crate full of birds that Randy is counting below.

Bob was threatening to steal the plantation owner's dog, Ellie.

This was a super trip and I'd recommend this plantation to anyone who would like to experience Georgia quail hunting.  I really appreciate the chance to do it - thanks Bob and Jim for thinking of me.  I'm willing to be a filler again anytime.
