It was an awesome morning. Surrounded by elk. All kinds of bugling - close in. Tuffy caught a glimpse of a "big 5x5". Tuffy is a man of few words so I don' know exactly what he meant but apparently there was no doubt that it was a shooter. Dave and Matt sat on an overlook and glassed. They spotted tons of elk and numerous bulls - some quite large. Tuffy had me set up twice with a bull bugling and responding to his cow calls. They were close. I could hear the grunt/wheez at the end of the bugle. It was awesome in every way except no shot. And then they all just go silent at the same time. Bedtime.
The mornings are the main deal here. It's cold (34 this morning - which was warm - has been in the 20's). They are active for about 2 hours of shooting light. In the afternoons it's pushing 80. They don't come out until last light.
Did I mention that Tuffy had 6 hunters last week? Five of them took bulls scoring between 315 and 350.
This was this morning. Typical of the flat land they were in at first light. There are meadows and clusters of trees.
A few more pictures from last night.
